Hmmm....I love to write. I love to journal. I love to talk about health, and life, and my children. So why is maintaining a blog so challenging to me? Your guess is as good as mine.
Life has changed quite a bit in our house since my last post. All three children are now going to school (rather than being schooled at home). Although the transition has had its challenges, I know this is where God wants them and they are growing and thriving in their new environment.
For the first time in 13 years (yes, I started teaching Faith at home when she was 3 years old), I have time on my hands during the day. This has opened up new doors of opportunity for my business and for ministry. I'm excited about this new direction for me as well.
So here's to new beginnings....
Life, Health and other Mysteries
By: Tonya Patterson
Body, Soul, Spirit
Welcome to my blog. I'm glad you're here. I hope you'll grab a cup of coffee or tea and visit with me a little while. My desire is that while you're here, you'll learn something that helps you live a healthier life; you'll be encouraged or inspired; you'll think about God in a new, more personal way; you'll laugh, or cry. Regardless of your response, I hope when you move on to more important things you'll think it was time well spent.
Why "Life, Health and Other Mysteries"? For those of you who followed my radio talk show, the name is no surprise. Being a nutrition consultant and personal trainer, my focus is often on physical Health. But I believe we have to be healthy in soul and spirit also to live an abundant Life. So you may find health tips in one post, recipes and workout suggestions in another, or family anecdotes and my personal musings about God. And Mysteries? Well, isn't that what life is all about? "Who am I?", "Why am I here?", "Why do I feel this way, and what do I need to do to feel better?"
I'm not a doctor, or a preacher...just a mom and a health coach wanting to make a difference in the world through the passions God put in my heart.
One of my favorite quotes is this:
"When one man (or woman), for whatever reason, has the opportunity to lead an extraordinary life, he has no right to keep it to himself. " Jacques Cousteau
This is my extraordinary, ordinary life.

Bring out the boats!

It has been raining since before 3 am. Tornado sirens have sounded almost constantly from 3 am to 4:30 am and then again from 7 to 9:30. We've had reports of 6 to 12 inches of rain with more to come through the rest of today and tomorrow. Roads are closed, sinkholes have formed and yards look more like ponds than playgrounds and patios. The gutters are overwhelmed, water is nearing the threshold. Some people are actually having to be rescued from their homes by boat!
The thing about the persistent sirens is this: after an hour of listening to them, they start to lose their sense of urgency. Reminds me of many of my nutrition counseling clients. They endure persistent headaches, joint pain, fatigue and other warning symptoms until they either become commonplace or turn into full-blown illness. Then they need a "boat" rescue. Something to help them out of the sinkhole that was inevitable but seemingly without warning.
What "warning signals" are you ignoring in your own body?
If you don't have more-than-enough energy to complete your day; if you need caffeine or sugary foods to keep you going; if you have mood swings, headaches, PMS, difficulty sleeping or any other health complaints; these are warning signals. Heed the warning signs, change course and avoid the sinkhole of illness. If you need direction or help, let me know. Changing course isn't always easy, but is certainly worth the effort.

Love is....
As I was teaching the youth last Wednesday night, finishing up our study on worldviews, the topic for that particular chapter was love.
In preparing for the lesson, I was amazed by the realization of how freely we use that word. "I love your shoes." "I love your new haircut." "Don't you just love the new Rascal Flatts song - 'Love is Unstoppable'?" (pun intended) And, "I love sushi". I confess, I'm very guilty of that last one.
I was wondering, have we overused the word love in trite ways to the point in which it has lost the depth of its meaning?
Do we even know what real love is anymore? Here's the definition from the youth book.... Love is a deliberate decision to care for or about someone else. And if that's true, what does that look like in real life?
Sometimes love is easy....
Most moms find it easy to put their children's needs above their own, because they love their children and want the best for them.
Loving your best friend and the people who are loving to you is pretty easy also, most of the time.
But what about that family member that is so disagreeable? You know, the one who has purposed to make your life miserable?
What about the mother who deliberately chooses to carry an unborn child with known medical complications?
What about the homeless man, or the orphan, or our Nation?
Loving when it's easy just seems to happen naturally. Loving when it's hard is definitely a deliberate decision.
All I know is, it certainly has made me rethink my use of the word love when it comes to "things". It's a word to be cherished like a priceless heirloom rather than thrown around like a trinket from the dollar store.
I know the Bible has this to say about love....
I'm blessed to have friends like that...friends that love me unconditionally whether I'm in a good mood, or a bad one. Friends that laugh with me and cry with me, but always stand beside me. Friends that, without question, would be here for me on a moment's notice. With that alone, I'm a wealthy person.
If you're one of those friends, I can't thank you enough! If you have a friend, or maybe even two, like that, you're a blessed person.
And, for the record, if I tell you I love you, it means I've deliberately chosen to care for and about you and I mean it with the utmost sincerity.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 (NIV)
That means God deliberately chose to care for and about each person on this earth so much that He allowed His Son to endure the most cruel death imaginable for our benefit.

Confession Time
Okay, it's confession time. By choosing to publish my personal stories and musings to this blog, I feel a little like you're peeping in my windows. (I hope the house is in order and the furniture dusted.)You might as well just come on in and join me for coffee (yes, I can be a health nut and still drink coffee).
I should tell you, I tend to be self-conscious about my writing so my postings may not be daily. I'll try not to spend hours mulling over the wording for one post, so that I can post more frequently.
And, finally, I want my postings to be meaningful or helpful in some way. Everyone I know lives a busy life. So for you to be here, reading my blog, is humbling in a sense. I feel the weight of wanting to honor your time.
Nonetheless, I'm excited to start this new journey and see where it leads. Glad you're walking along side of me. Let me grab my coffee, and I'm ready to go!
